Fifth Astana Economic Forum to highlight key challenges, offer great networking opportunities

The Fifth Astana Economic Forum from May 22 to 24 will shed light on some of the most pressing economic issues of our times, offer participants a chance to rub shoulders with Nobel Prize winners and other glitterati, and present business opportunities.

<yandex:full-text>The Fifth Astana Economic Forum from May 22 to 24 will shed light on some of the most pressing economic issues of our times, offer participants a chance to rub shoulders with Nobel Prize winners and other glitterati, and present business opportunities.
The annual Astana conferences, which began in 2008, have quickly become important venues for the discussion of global economic challenges and a place where Kazakhstan leaders can showcase the nation’s accomplishments and learn from some of the world’s top minds.
Last year the Forum drew 3,500 participants from 75 countries – almost nine times the 400 participants as the first conference in 2007. This year’s conference in the Palace of Independence in Kazakhstan’s capital city is expected to attract 5,000 people from 80 countries.
”The Astana Economic Forum is an annual interactive platform for discussions and solutions of global problems that is unparalleled in its scope and level around the Eurasian region,” said Murat Karimsakov, chairman of the executive body of the Eurasian Economic Club of Scientists Association, the main Forum organizer.
This Fifth Astana Economic Forum will feature an astounding 12 Nobel Prize winners – five more than last year.
Speakers besides the Nobel laureates will include heads of state, government ministers, central bank governors, leading economists, top corporate executives, leaders of international organizations such as branches of the United Nations and leaders of non-governmental organizations.
President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who will give the Forum’s opening address, will head a list of Kazakh notables who include many government ministers.
Among the most recognizable non-Kazakh names will be former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Hungarian architect and engineer Erno Rubik, inventor of Rubik’s Cube. For a comprehensive list of notables registered for the Forum, go to the link www.aef.kz/en/speakers.
The Forum’s Nobel tradition began in its second year in 2009, when two laureates showed up. In 2010 there were three laureates and in 2011 there were seven.
Kazakhstan doesn’t invite the laureates to show off or to try to differentiate the Astana Economic Forum from other events of its kind, economic expert Zhanar Aizhanova said in 2011. Aizhanova, who was Kazakhstan’s minister of Economic Development and Trade last year, said Forum organizers believe the laureates offer some of the best insightful in the world on economic issues.
Two of the issues that Nobel winners and others are expected to address at this year’s Forum is what many experts see as dysfunctional global economic and financial systems.
In December of last year, President Nazarbayev proposed an alternative to the current system of the G-8 and G-20 nations playing the major role in shaping economy policy that affects the entire world.
Contending that these nations set policies that protect or enhance their interests rather than the world community’s, the president called for a larger group of policy-setting nations, including developing countries.
His proposal, the G-Global Initiative, is certain to be a hot topic of discussion at the Fifth Astana Economic Forum. You can learn more about it by going to the Web site www.g-global.aef.kz.
“This year the Astana Economic Forum will be of economic significance, and hopefully the discussions will include our G-Global idea for overcoming the global crisis,” he said. The president was referring to the fact that much of the world continues to suffer from the lingering effects of a downturn in the global economy in 2008 and 2009.
Nazarbayev has also said that the world needs a new global currency to replace the dollar – or at least a basket of regional currencies.
Robert Mundell, a Canadian who won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1999, agrees with the president. He said at last year’s Astana Economic Forum that the world needs a fairer currency system because fluctuations in the dollar can do great damage to some countries’ economies.
“I am interested in the reform of the international monetary system, and I came to Kazakhstan especially to discuss this issue,” Mundell said at a previous Forum.
In addition to discussions of the global economic and financial systems, the Forum will offer insight into other economic topics and on specific industries.
The Forum’s main organizer, the Eurasian Economic Club of Scientists Association, has put together a list of broader economic topics that include:
-- Innovation, competitiveness and entrepreneurship. The whole world is interested in these topics, but they have special relevance in Kazakhstan, which is going all out to develop a 21st Century economy.
-- How to achieve a sustainable economy. Kazakhstan is oil-, gas- and minerals-rich, but wants to begin planning now for the days when its vast national resources begin to dwindle.
-- Investment. Kazakhstan has had stunning success in attracting foreign investment since independence 20 years ago -- $120 billion, to be exact. But it needs more investment to modernize its roads, rail system, pipelines, electrical grids and other infrastructure.
Investment is such an important subject that much of the discussion will come at Astana Invest 2012, a special event on the sidelines of the Forum.
Astana officials will be at the Forum touting their city as an investment venue. The capital, which boasts some of the most innovative architecture in the world, has been an engine of Kazakhstan’s economic growth the past 15 years, tripling to 750,000 residents.
-- Initial public offerings of stock, or IPOs. This issue is on the minds of Kazakhs because the country plans to privatize a number of its national companies by issuing stock. President Nazarbayev came up with the idea of Peoples IPOs to help rank-and-file Kazakhs benefit from the country’s rapid development.
-- Public Private Partnerships. A particular focus of this discussion with be partnerships in tourism. Kazakhstan, which has huge tourism potential, is facing the challenging task of developing the costly infrastructure that allows its tourism industry to take off.
-- Employment and fair-wage practices.
-- Modernizing the civil service.
The Astana Economic Forum’s industry-focused topics will include:
-- Managing fossil-fuel resources. Oil and gas are at the heart of Kazakhstan’s economy, so learning how to manage these resources better is a major concern.
-- Challenges to developing a top-flight health-care system, medical-equipment-production industry and pharmaceutical-production industry. Kazakhstan is making sweeping changes in its health-care system, and has begun producing its own medical equipment and drugs.
-- The Customs Union’s attempt to become a food hub. Food security is a key issue in a world with a growing population, water shortages, drought and other challenges to food production.
The Customs Union countries of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus are major food producers that can help nations in need. Kazakhstan is not only one of the world’s biggest grain producers, for example, but is the global leader in flour production . It’s also developing one of the world’s largest beef industries.
-- Communications. Another special event on the sidelines of the Forum will be Connect Kazakhstan, which will focus on information and communication technology. Kazakhstan is making rapid strides in this area, but plans to modernize further in coming years.
-- Opportunities in Kazakhstan’s transportation sector. The country is rebuilding its portion of the Silk Road Highway from Western Europe to China. It’s also spending billions of dollars to modernize its national railway system with new track, locomotives, passenger and freight cars and other equipment.
In addition to holding seminars, roundtables and other events that are open to everyone, the Astana Economic Forum organizers schedule specialty “conferences within conferences.”
For example, there will be a conference of finance ministers of the Common of Independent States, or former Soviet countries.
There will also be a meeting of educational ministers of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which Kazakhstan chaired last year. Kazakhstan is expected to play an influential role in this conference. It is reforming its educational system from top to bottom with a goal of making it one of the world’s best.
In addition to soaking up ideas to improve their businesses, Astana Economic Forum participants can make contacts at the conference that lead to business deals. In fact, the Forum will help them with that.
One of the services that Forum organizers offer is arranging meetings between prospective business partners. Those interested in a meeting with another Forum participant may ask the organizers to line up the meeting.
The conference organizers have arranged meeting rooms at the Forum venue – the Palace of Independence -- specifically for those interested in forging business partnerships.
The more high-profile the person you want to meet, the more time the organizers need to arrange the meeting. So get your requests in early by emailing meetings@aef.kz.
The Astana Economic Forum typically schedules exhibitions in conjunction with its presentation events – and this year will be no exception.
One exhibition will be “Industrial and Innovation Potential of Kazakhstan.” Another will focus on information and communication technology, and a still another on investing in Kazakhstan.
Those wishing to attend the Astana Economic Forum will find additional information, including how to register, at www.aef.kz.</yandex:full-text>
